We celebrated Pauline's birthday doing a day trip to Elbow River Falls in Kananaskis Country! It was a well needed getaway just a few hours away from our home in Central Alberta, a chance to get outside on a mild winter day, see some mountains, and take in some fresh air together. It was a glorious sunny day with clear blue skies.
Neither Pauline nor I had been here before, so we took our time to complete the short one (1) km hike to the falls from the parking area to the lookouts. We also explored the river bed upstream.
We tested several recording devices on this trip, including a new POV camera but we have to work on making it less 'bouncy' and since no drones are allowed in the Provincial Parks so we brought our extra long selfie stick for the Insta360. Check out my underwater footage in this crystal-clear river. Had hoped to see some fish swimming by, but no luck this round.
Elbow Falls is a small set of waterfalls along the Elbow River, west of the hamlet of Bragg Creek within Kananaskis Improvement District, Alberta. They are located along Highway 66, 20 km (12 mi) west of the Bragg Creek turnoff on Highway 22.
After the 2013 Alberta floods, the day use area was destroyed. The Elbow River overflowed its banks and destroyed all of the picnicking area and most of the paved trails. The riverbed itself also suffered major destruction, now being replaced by mounds of rock, rather than soil and trees.
Fun fact: The site was used in the climatic scene of the 1992 thriller movie Killer Image . Actor Michael Ironside falls to his death here at the end of the film. Shot in October 1990.
Happy 55, my love! ???? Here's to many more outdoor excursions together.
