Merle was born into poverty and nearly lost everything. When he was nine years old, his father died, leaving behind only debts and pain. The boy stole food, wandered around in freight cars, and constantly ran afoul of the law. At twenty-one, he ended up in San Quentin prison. Behind bars, amidst the cold beds and darkness, he heard a performance by Johnny Cash and realized that music could save his soul. After his release, Merle was reborn. He wrote songs about ordinary working people, about forgotten people – songs without embellishment or lies. "Mama Tried" became not just a song, but his confession. His story raises the question: how many people are capable of rising from this abyss?
