written by Kris Kristofferson in 1968, and his recording of it as it appears on his debut album is by far my favorite (released June 1970). It was first recorded by Bill Nash, but it was popularized by Ray Price. There are a number of other notable artists that have recorded this great song: Wayne Newton, Aaron Neville, Al Green, Anne Murray, Billy Walker, Chet Atkins, Crystal Gayle, Dolly Parton, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, Isaac Hayes, Jamey Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Joe Diffie, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Loretta Lynn, Lynn Anderson, Perry Como, Rita Coolidge, Tennessee Ernie Ford with Glen Campbell, and Willie Nelson.
