IF THIS IS WOKE (I"M GOIN' BACK TO BED), the first single from the Merry Mutineers came about as we were bitching about the current state of affairs - especially with respect to pop culture and the phenomenon known as 'cancel culture.' Dee Lincoln joked, "If this is 'woke' I'm going back to bed." We all had a good laugh about that! Hutch suggested setting up a recording session to work on some new original material. Dee remembered his joke and said "Dang! That could be a nice country song! I better sit down and write a lyric!' So he wrote a lyric based on the concept of artistic freedom - drawing inspiration from the wokesters trying to get Dave Chappelle cancelled, Dr. King's 'I Have A Dream' speech, and a dash of Beatle-esque stream of consciousness. Originally intended as a country waltz, Hutch believed it would be better suited as a rock anthem and wrote the music during the recording session - and he was right, by golly! Dig it, man!
