Leona is a classic country music singer and songwriter who wrote this for her then-husband (1978-1983) Merle Haggard along with another of Merle's No. 1 hits, "Someday When Things Are Good." She also wrote hit songs for the likes of Loretta Lynn and Connie Smith, and she recorded the first country album by a female artist inside a prison (San Quentin's First Lady) in 1976.
