The Highway Man is a song written by American singer songwriter Jimmy Webb . The song was influenced by the real life hanging of highway man Jonathan Wild. Webb recorded the song in May 1977. Glen Campbell recorded his version in 1979. In 1985 the song became the inspiration for the naming of the super group The Highway Man featuring Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willy Nelson. Their version of the song hit number 1 on the hot country songs billboard chart for 20 weeks. The song earned Webb a grammy award for best country song in 1986.
