Gary Stewart was one of the most powerful and underrated voices of 1970s country music. Born on May 28, 1944, in Jenkins, Kentucky, and raised in Florida, Stewart grew up influenced by country, gospel, and rhythm and blues. He moved to Nashville in the late 1960s, first finding work as a songwriter before launching his own recording career.

His breakthrough came in 1975 with the album Out of Hand, which featured his No. 1 hit, “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles).” Known for his soaring high tenor and emotionally raw delivery, Stewart blended honky-tonk grit with the rebellious edge of the outlaw movement. Songs like “Drinkin’ Thing” and “Your Place or Mine” helped cement his place alongside artists such as Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, who admired his vocal ability.

Despite his talent, Stewart struggled with personal demons and alcohol, and as country music shifted styles in the 1980s, his mainstream success faded. Still, many traditional country fans consider him one of the greatest pure vocalists the genre ever produced.

Tragically, Gary Stewart’s life ended on December 16, 2003, at the age of 59. Just weeks earlier, his wife of many years had passed away, a loss that deeply affected him. Overwhelmed by grief and long-standing personal struggles, Stewart died by suicide at his Florida home. His passing marked a heartbreaking end to a remarkable but troubled life.

Today, Gary Stewart is remembered not only for his hits, but for the raw honesty and emotional intensity he brought to every song he sang — qualities that continue to resonate with country music fans.
