Toby Keith, a country music legend known for hits like "Red Solo Cup" and "Should Have Been a Cowboy," passed away. His age was 62.

The musician "passed peacefully" on Monday night, according to a family statement posted online. The diagnosis of stomach cancer came to Keith in the autumn of 2021.

As stated in the release, "Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5 while surrounded by his family." "He fought his battle with dignity and bravery," the judge remarked.

Just so everyone knows, the note ended with, "please respect the privacy of his family at this time."

Toby Keith Covel was born in Oklahoma on July 8, 1961, according to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He spent his childhood on a farm just outside of Oklahoma City. The lifelong country music fan worked as a rodeo hand in high school and in the oil fields after graduation, all the while performing in bars at night, before deciding to devote his life to music.

While he was an active member of the band Easy Money, he met Tricia Lucus, the woman he would later marry and spend forty years with. Their 1984 wedding followed a three-year courtship. Keith took in Lucus's 1980 daughter, Shelley Covel Rowland, after they were married. Krystal was born in 1985, and Stelen was born in 1997, the couple's subsequent children.

After a stint playing minor league football and performing on the honky-tonk circuit, the superstar reportedly obtained a solo record deal in the early 1990s, according to the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. He broke through in 1993 with the hit track "Should've Been a Cowboy," which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He went on to have his self-titled debut album certified platinum, and the song became the most played hit on country radio that decade.

His popularity continued well into the new millennium, with singles like "How Do You Like Me Now?!" (released in 1999) and "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" (released in 2000) among his many hits. His collaborations with artists like Willie Nelson (on 2003's "Beer for My Horses") and others helped him gain global appeal with songs like "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying" (1996) and "Beer for My Horses" (2003).

One of the most famous country-rock artists of all time, the singer of "Who's Your Daddy?" became famous for his honky-tonk and patriotic songs about cowboy life and love of country. Over the course of his career, he received five American Country Music Awards for entertainer of the year, a highly esteemed accolade. He was also a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015, both of which were in 2021. Plus, the group did not hesitate to bestow upon him their highest accolade—the Merle Haggard spirit award—in due time.

Keith has had his fair share of public feuds with other prominent figures throughout his career, including The Chicks' Natalie Maines. Several months after the events of September 11, Maines was critical of the 2002 song "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)" (as reported by Biography). Also, in 2009, Rolling Stone released an article on his feud with country singer Kris Kristofferson, who allegedly brought up a meeting they had in 2003.

His 2003 smash single "I Love This Bar" served as inspiration for the 2005 restaurant brand he launched, I Love This Bar & Grill. His fame expanded beyond the music industry as a result of this initiative.

George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump are just a few of the presidents who have enjoyed Keith's performances during his career. Furthermore, he was presented with the National Medal of Arts by President Trump in 2021.Keith broke the news of his cancer diagnosis when attending the People's Choice Country Awards in September 2023.
