In 2016, wildfires ripped through the Great Smoky Mountains, destroying more than
1,000 homes in Sevier County. While the smoke was still rising, Dolly Parton stepped in. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she launched the My People Fund. A nationally televised telethon raised over $9 million in days. In total, more than $12 million was collected and given back. Over 900 families received
$1,000 a month for six months, with a larger final check—around $10,000 or more per family to help them start again. It wasn’t just charity. It was action.
