Democrats swept a trio of races on Tuesday in the first major elections since Donald Trump regained the presidency, elevating a new generation of leaders and giving the beleaguered party a shot of momentum ahead of next year's congressional elections.
Zohran Mamdani issued a direct challenge to President Trump immediately after securing a historic election victory.
Mamdani, 34, a Democrat, will be New York’s youngest mayor in more than a century and the first Muslim to lead the most populous city in the country after securing more than 50 per cent of the vote to see off challengers Andrew Cuomo, an independent, and Curtis Sliwa, a Republican.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, will now lead a city that is one of the major financial centres in the world. His rise has alarmed many business leaders in New York and astonished even some of his supporters, who watched as a previously unknown state assemblyman rose from obscurity to became a voice for progressive politics in the US.
In his victory speech, he told thousands of cheering supporters that “hope is alive”.
