(AP) Hundreds of Somalis took to the streets of Mogadishu Friday night to voice their outrage after U.S. President Donald Trump referred to Somali immigrants in the United States as “garbage.”
Trump made the comments as he closed a two-hour Cabinet meeting Tuesday.
Somali Americans, he said, “come from hell” and “contribute nothing.” They do “nothing but b****” and “their country stinks.”
“We don't want ‘em in our country,” Trump said five times of the nation's 260,000 people of Somali descent.
“Let ’em go back to where they came from and fix it.”
Then Trump turned to a familiar target. Rep. Ilhan Omar, (Democrat Minneapolis), an outspoken and frequent Trump critic.
Trump referred to Omar as “garbage."
"Her friends are garbage," he said.
His remarks on Somalia and Omar drew shock and condemnation from Minneapolis to Mogadishu.
"We are here to condemn both Trump and his government, and to make it clear that his comments do not define us as Somalis," said one protester in the Somali capital.
"We are not garbage. He is the one who is trash," said another demonstrator.
Demonstrators waved banners and images of Omar and chanted anti-Trump slogans.
