The northern lights lit up skies across the United States, with rare sightings stretching as far south as Alabama, Oklahoma, Northern California, and the Midwest after a severe Level 4 geomagnetic storm reached Earth.

The surge in visibility comes from a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) as the sun approaches the peak of its 11-year solar cycle. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center warned the storm could disrupt GPS, satellites, and radio signals, but also produce dazzling auroras across much of the country.

For the best view, experts recommend dark skies, low light pollution, and checking the sky frequently — even where auroras are rarely seen.
